What happens?

Visitors sit on a simulated bicycle adjacent to a large mirror. When they begin to peddle the bicycle fast the opaque surface becomes transparent and reveals a human skeleton also peddling a bicycle in the same manner. This simulated x-ray machine includes a fun element of surprise.

How does it work?

The peddling action of the visitor on the exhibit triggers the mechanism behind the screen which starts the skeleton moving and a light to come on revealing the scene which was hitherto hidden.

Why is it important?

It encourages visitors to explore the movements of the bones and the body. It also relates movement to energy and cause and effect.

How does it relate to the curriculum?

  • Engages pupils in investigation;
  • provides opportunities to find out about themselves and how they move;
  • encourages pupils to understand the role of skeletons and muscles and to learn about movement and that exercise contributes to good health.
