Reaction Time

What happens?

Visitors test their reaction times by pressing buttons on a circular board as they light up. The faster the buttons are pressed in the correct order the better their time.

How does it work?

Visitors must stand or kneel in front of the exhibit and press the green start button. When a red light appears they must press the corresponding button as fast as possible. After pressing five buttons the time taken will be displayed. This exhibit is fun for several visitors together as it introduces an element of competition. Visitors can try to beat each other's times.

Why is it important?

The exhibit develops an appreciation of the body's abilities and fine tuning of individual capabilities. It encourages a combination of coordination and concentration and an empathy with others.

How does it relate to the curriculum?

  • Engages pupils in investigation;
  • provides opportunities to find out about themselves and how they move;
  • encourages pupils to understand the role of skeletons and muscles and to learn about movement and that exercise contributes to good health.
