What happens?
This exhibit consists of a console in a small music studio, a camera and TV monitor and a selection of pretend musical instruments. The console has controls to allow children to select music and lighting. The camera will pick up the children acting as musicians on stage so that they can watch themselves and any friends who have joined their band on the TV monitor screen.
How does it work?
Children can select a model instrument if they wish. Once the music starts, they can perform their selection of music while immersed in the feeling of being on stage and actually performing for an audience. The music is controlled so that each track plays for a minimum of 30 seconds before it can be changed.
Why is it important?
This experience lets the child's imagination run wild, and allows them to take part in role-play as musicians and backstage management. This vastly open-ended and immersive experience will encourage free expression.
How does it relate to the curriculum?
- Early Years: Provides opportunities for co-operation, taking turns and sharing: provides opportunities for children to express emotion, develop self confidence, extend their imagination, identify characters and take part in group situations as they sing and dance; provides opportunities for children to respond freely to music through movement and mime; provides opportunities to engage in role play.
- Science: Provides opportunities for planning, carrying out and evaluating an activity; encourages children to learn about themselves and others.
- English: Engages children in talking and listening.
- Music: Engages children in performing and responding to others' music; provides opportunities to sing a variety of sounds and while doing so develop some control of words, expression, breathing and singing in tune; provides opportunities to respond to songs in an imaginative way with appropriate actions, movement and gesture.
- P.E: Allows children to engage in dance, listening to and moving to different accompaniments; allows children to perform simple steps and movements to given rhythms and musical phrases.
