Pan Pipes

w5

What happens?

Percussion and string instruments have already been explored. This exhibit examines another way to make sound, this time using air, i.e. a wind instrument. Children can move a set of pan pipes along a slider and a ventilator blows air over the top of the pipes when the green button is held.

How does it work?

A fast stream of air moving over the top of a pipe causes the air in the pipe itself to vibrate, creating a sound. The length of the pipe affects the pitch of the sound, creating a higher or lower note.

Why is it important?

This small exhibit encourages visitors to lean close and listen carefully.

How does it relate to the curriculum?

  • Provides opportunity for sharing and playing together.
  • Exploring music and the senses.
  • Simple cause and effect relationships.
  • Science: the physics of sound, vibration and sound, exploring materials.
