What happens?

Two telescopes located near to the window in DO allow pupils to see to the north, west and south of the Odyssey buildings.  Graphics help to identify the local landmarks.

Why is it important?

The unique panorama from the window in DO includes much of Belfast City Centre, the Port of Belfast, the River Lagan and the Cave Hill Mountains. Pupils can use the ever-changing view as a starting point to investigate or concentrate on one particular theme, such as transport, buildings or weather, or can learn more about their Cultural heritage through identifying particular landmarks.

How does it relate to the primary curriculum?

  • Science: Gives pupils the opportunity to find out how human activities create a variety of waste products.
  • CCT: EMU and Cultural heritage.
  • Geography: Provides pupils with the opportunity to learn about the locations, shape and use of common landscape features, and some of the ways in which people affect the environment locally.

How does it relate to the post-primary curriculum?

  • Science: Provides pupils with the opportunity to use apparatus and instruments to make observations.
  • Geography: Provides opportunities for pupils to learn about the size, shape and function of settlements, the land uses in settlements and the impact of economic activity on the environment.
  • CCT: EMU and Cultural heritage.

What thinking skills are involved?

Sorting, classifying, grouping; Analysing, part/whole relationships, comparing/contrasting; Making observations.

What learning styles are involved?

Logical; Spatial.
